THE TELOMERE EFFECT: A revolutionary approach to living younger, healthier, longer

-Elizabeth Blackburn & Elissa Epel , (Published by Orion Spring, 3rd January 2017)

“Wrinkles will only go where the smiles have been” - this quote by American musician and lyricist Jimmy Buffett, rightly exemplifies the extraordinary process of ageing. Ageing or Senescence is a scientific process that happens naturally and is controlled by both extrinsic and intrinsic factors. So, continuing with this topic, let us introduce an interesting book which changed my perspective on ageing and health. The book ‘The Telomere Effect’, written by Nobel Prize winner Prof. Elizbeth Blackburn and well-known Psychologist Dr.Elissa Epel has delved into this topic very bravely. As you aware, Telomeres are short regions on the tips of our chromosomes, consisting of repetitive sequences, and have been attributed to protect our chromosomes from damage. This book is truly a wonder, and it really helps us to understand the changes that our body undergoes as we move on the path of ageing. Of course, diet, exercise, sleep, stress, emotions, genetic factors and lifestyle choices influence our ageing pattern.

This book is written in a simple and lucid style which would appeal a wide audience. Not only the students, researchers, professionals, but anyone who is concerned about a healthy diet and lifestyle would definitely be inspired by reading this book. It also puts forward certain questions which helps us to evaluate our current lifestyle and suggests certain healthy changes to be incorporated to make it better.

All of us prefer to look young and beautiful right? The current cosmetic market is brimming with anti-ageing serums and creams which claim to erase off the premature signs of ageing. Reading this book, we would be inspired to stay away from those anti-ageing pills or products as it could do more harm than good. By quoting science and personal stories, this book provides useful information on physical and mental health. Prof. Elizabeth’s cutting-edge research coupled with Dr Elissa’s studies gives us an unambiguous and complete rendition on the roles played by telomeres in influencing our ageing. The authors have taken into consideration the non-science readers and haven’t included scientific terms much, but have kept the content simple and comprehensible.

In this current pandemic situation, this book is highly recommended as it would inspire us to get rid of our sedentary lifestyle and adopt healthy alternatives. Overall, this book is very informative as well as interesting. We strongly suggest you all to get a copy of this book. The book is reasonably priced at INR 411/- (Paperback), INR 1,249/- (Hard Cover), INR 280/- (Kindle Edition), INR 5,858/- (Audio CD) on Amazon and definitely worth the money.
